What to Wear | Dressing for Your Maternity Session | Peoria Maternity Photographer

Not too long ago I posted my opinion on how to decide what to wear for your photo session. Maternity photos are such a special and unique experience that I thought I would break down those original 7 steps a bit specifically for your Maternity Session. (You can find the original post here: How to Decide What to Wear for Your Photo Session.)

So, here is my revised list as they relate specifically to your Maternity Photo Session…

My Top 5 Tips for What to Wear to Your Maternity Session

Tip #1: Consider the Purpose of the Photo Session

Ok, so you might be saying to yourself – “Well, yea! Of course!” And, I know it probably seems like an obvious tip to give. That being said, I do think it’s important to address this. Maternity Sessions = Show of that baby bump!

When selecting your wardrobe for this style of shoot, consider sticking to clothing that is designed specifically for maternity photo sessions. Also, be sure to consider how much skin your are comfortable showing. In today’s photography world, maternity photos can range from completely covered to only showing the baby bump to completely nude. You’ll want to communicate with your photographer about any expectations you have regarding showing skin.

Bonus Tip! – Our clients are given access to our studio wardrobe. What does that mean for you? You may find the perfect dress in our studio wardrobe which means you don’t have to go searching for that perfect dress on your own.

Tip #2: Keep the Location & Season in Mind

Even though we are selecting a dress designed specifically for maternity sessions, you’ll want to also keep in mind where and what time of year we are taking these photos.

For example, a maternity session in January or February is most likely going to be set indoors in a studio location. This alleviates the need for extra layers and allows us to get get a little more creative with sheer fabrics.

If the session is taking place in an outdoor location, some of those sheer dresses are probably not going to be acceptable in public view.

Tip #3: What To Do About Hair and Makeup

For your maternity shoot, keep your makeup pretty natural and to a minimum. The same holds true with your hair. Also, check with your photographer about what is included in your booking. You may find the photographer includes professional hair and make-up styling with your session taking away your need to worry about them all together.

Bonus Tip! – M3 Creative is one of those photographers that provides professional hair and make-up styling with your session. Be sure to confirm your arrival time and we will take care of the rest!

Tip #4: Make Your Photos Timeless

You might love that trendy top or pair of pants right now but will your photos stand the test of time if you wear that item of clothing? If you don’t think you have anything in your closet that will work, you can always consider renting wardrobe from places like Rent the Runway or Photographer’s Trunk – or even from YOUR photographer’s studio wardrobe. (Hint: Ask us about our studio wardrobe closet)

Tip #5: Dressing Your Spouse

Yep! That’s right! We highly recommend getting your spouse involved in the session as well.

As you’re coordinating your outfit with your spouse, keep in mind that your outfits will look the most cohesive on camera when the color palette and wardrobe pieces coordinate, but don’t actually “match.” In fact, we recommend that you avoid thinking about “matching,” and instead think about what “fits” together. This will create more visual interest, and allow each personality to shine through.

If you aren’t sure what colors or patterns will compliment your dress, reach out to your photographer for help.
