How to Decide What to Wear to Your Photo Session

Whether this is your first professional photo session ever or the first in a long time, you probably have a couple questions about what to expect. A common concern I hear from people having their photos taken for the first time is what to wear. Planning outfits for everyday can be stressful enough and planning those outfits for the photo session shouldn’t have to be stressful at all.

So, here are my Top 7 Top Tips for Deciding What to Wear for a Photo Session

Tip #1: What is the purpose of the photo session? This should be your first thought when deciding what to wear. My recommendations for a high school senior session are going to be different than my recommendations for personal branding session. Choose an appropriate outfit for the occasion and something that suits your personality.

Tip #2: Keep the location & season in mind. Where is the photo session taking place? Choose an outfit that will keep you feeling comfortable and confident. For example, if you’re on a beach, those new high heels might not be the most logical choice and, vice versa, a bathing suit might not work in your favor at the local nature preserve. Let’s just say you might end up looking a bit out of place.

Tip #3: Mix and match. Don’t be afraid to wear patterns or prints for your photo session but keep them to a minimum and try to pair them with solid colors. If you’re having a family photo session for example, have two family members in printed items and two in solid colors. Play with different colors to match the mood and setting of the shoot.

Tip #4: Make your photos timeless. You might love that trendy top or pair of pants now but will your photos stand the test of time if you wear that item of clothing? If you don’t think you have anything in your close that will work, you can always consider renting wardrobe from places like Rent the Runway or even your photographer’s studio wardrobe.

Tip #5: What to do about makeup. This is another response that highly depends on the type of photos you are taking. Fashion shoots will call for more dramatic makeup and possibly even hiring a professional. For your everyday maternity, family or portrait shoots, keep your makeup natural and to a minimum. Also, be sure to check with your photographer about what is included in your booking. Many of our sessions (like maternity for example) include a professional hair and make-up styling taking away your need to worry about them all together.

Tip #6: Fit is more important than you think. If you already have an outfit in mind for your shoot, try it on before the time to make sure that it fits correctly and compliments your body type. Not comfortable critiquing your own wardrobe choice? Try using a professional stylist.

Fit #7: Try not to go brand crazy. Unless your headed to a branding session for a prominent brand name, wearing too much clothing with that one brand name just makes you look like a walking ad. Clothing with large graphics on it also doesn’t work well as it will end up being the focus of your photos.

Remember to have fun on your photo session, be yourself and don’t hesitate to ask your photographer for guidance.
