Top 5 Things to Ask Before Hiring Your Wedding Photographer | Dallas Wedding Photographer | Wedding Tips

As a previous bride and wedding photographer, I always love sitting down with couples to discuss their vision for their wedding images. Now let me to you, friend, all too often it surprises me how few questions people ask. Choosing your wedding photographer is a big part of your special day. Treat your initial consultation like a job interview – (trust me, that’s exactly what your photographer is doing).

Of course, there are a ton of questions you could ask, but let’s get right down to my top 5 questions every couple should ask their photographer BEFORE hiring them for your big day.

Before we start, let me preface this list of questions with one comment. You’ll notice that pricing is not on the top of my list of interview questions. Why? Yes, I understand pricing is a factor in the final decision; however, let’s concentrate on the items that are really going to effect your big day. Let’s face it – after your big day goes off without a hitch, your wedding photography (and videography) is the one thing that will stay with you forever.

So with that being said – Ready, friend? Great! So, grab that cup of coffee and a notebook and pen. Here we go!

Top 5 Interview Questions When Hiring a Wedding Photographer

#1 – How would you describe your photography and editing style?
There are many different types of editing styles these days – light and airy, dark and moody, film, vibrant, and the list goes on and on. You want to know what your images will look like before you get them. Notice that editing style is only one part of this question. Some photographers take a more candid approach to images while others pose ever press of the shutter. Some are a happy blend of the two. If one is more important than the other be sure to find out what approach the photographer you’ve selected takes.

#2 – Ask to see their wedding portfolio.
This is a great follow-up question to #1. After the photographer describes their approach and editing style, be sure to take an opportunity to review their recent wedding portfolio. Be sure it is a recent wedding, too! Photographers are constantly growing and trying new things. It’s always better to know you are looking at recent work. Be sure the look of their images matches their description of their style and more importantly matches what you envision for your own wedding.

#3 – Do you have insurance?
Ok, friend, this is a super important question and I want you to promise me that you ask this question of EVERY photographer you interview including family photographers you use for future sessions. If they don’t have insurance, they aren’t protected and neither are you. Many wedding venues require the outside vendors to carry insurance. Imagine how devastated you would be if your photographer was turned away because they couldn’t provide adequate proof of insurance?

Personally, I feel so strongly about this that M3 Creative carries general business, equipment and liability insurance through Hartford Insurance and also through Professional Photographers of America (PPA).

#4 – Are you a member of the PPA?
You want to work with the best, right? PPA photographers do so much more than just snap a photo. They have the techniques and skills to get that one shot – that once in a lifetime moment – your family will remember forever. PPA photographers also abide by a very strict code of ethics and are constantly furthering their education to assure they stay on top of all the industry changes and standards.

#5 – What is included in your packages?
Ok, so here is the details question. Every photographer offers slightly different services. Some package everything up in neatly prepared packages while others allow you to create your own from the bottom up. Either way, friend, be sure you know exactly what is included in your photography services and what is not. If you want something that isn’t clearly offered in the photographers packages, ask to have the service added. This minimizes unexpected surprises on the big day and assures you are getting exactly what you wanted.
