Why a Local Wedding Photographer is your Best Choice | Tips and Tricks

These days it seems the area is saturated with options for wedding photography. Many of us will travel to destination wedding locations and I’ll admit, I would never shoot down an opportunity to travel to an awesome venue outside the Dallas metro area. But, there are some pretty big reasons why choosing a local photographer can be highly advantages.

1. Face to Face Consultations

Almost all of my brides meet with me in person whether it is at a local coffee shop or at my home studio. The face to face interactions doesn’t stop there. After that initial meeting, there is the engagement session which I gift to my couples as a way for us to get to know each other a little better and for my couples to feel comfortable around my trusty camera. Inevitably, there is often one final meeting to finalize the plan for the big day. Using a photographer who is local means you can have these meetings in person with very little travel time.

2. Travel

On this topic, there is the obvious advantage: Choosing a local photographer means you don’t have outrageous travel expenses like airfare and hotel accommodations to consider. In fact, you most likely won’t have any travel expenses for your photographer.

Now… let’s talk about the commonly overlooked advantage to local pro. I plan every aspect of my day when it comes to weddings and that includes my travel routes. A local photographer knows the back roads. If a traffic jam hits between your ceremony and reception sites, the local pro is more likely to know that alternative route. And, if something happens to their source of transportation, they are more likely to have alternatives readily available.

3. Familiarity

Yep, that seasoned local pro knows the ins and outs of the area. As mentioned in the previous topic, this includes alternative routes to and between venues. This also means they have experience photographing weddings at many of the local venues. In fact, local photographer’s have built relationships with the owners and sraff of many local venues. Choose one of the few venues she’s never been to? No problem! She’s local so she can drive by before the big day to scope out the location.

Locations are also important for that pre-wedding engagement session. The local photographer is more likely to be able to suggest some fantastic locations for that engagement session.

4. Local Vendor Recommendations

After numerous wedding seasons, that local photographer has met and worked with a large number of other local wedding professionals. Need an expert hair stylist or having trouble finding a florist who understands your vision? Your local wedding photographer can recommend one!
